Comorbidity

Comorbidity is a health condition that exists alongside the primary disease and affects the overall health condition of a person. Typically, certain diseases tend to coexist, and the existence of one might cause another.

For instance, a person living with type 2 diabetes might develop cholesterol issues. High cholesterol is a comorbidity with diabetes.

There can be multiple comorbidities. For example, high cholesterol and hypertension are comorbidities of diabetes.

Multiple comorbidities or multimorbidities pose significant health dangers, such as increased risk of complications, worsened quality of life and possible interactions of medications. Hence, health insurance companies can charge a loading or deny coverage to people with multiple comorbidities.
