Government Insurance Schemes in India

The Government of India has launched multiple insurance schemes for various industries to provide financial protection and social security to different sections of society (poor, farmers, workers, and senior citizens). Usually, these schemes are categorized into health insurance, life insurance, crop and agriculture insurance, pension schemes, and other social security initiatives.

Key Objectives of these Government Insurance Schemes

  • Financial Inclusion – It will extend the insurance coverage to underserved and economically weaker sections of society.
  • Risk mitigation – The Government of India is protecting this weaker section of society by protecting them against the risks of loss of their life, health or agricultural crops so that they can stay more productive without having to worry.
  • Social Security – With schemes like pension and income support plans, the Government of India is providing social security to the marginalised with an income stream in their elderly and vulnerable stage of life.
  • Affordability – Basically, the premiums are very low and will not burn the pocket of the policyholders.

Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY)
  • It is a health insurance scheme meant for below-poverty-line (BPL) families.
  • It covers up to ₹30,000 per family per year for hospitalization.
Life Insurance Schemes Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY)
  • ₹2 lakh life insurance coverage on policyholder’s death due to any cause.
  • Annual premium is ₹436.
  • Eligibility: Individuals aged 18–50 with a bank account.
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)
  • Accidental death & disability coverage.
  • ₹2 lakh for accidental death, ₹1 lakh for partial disability.
  • Annual premium: ₹20.
Crop & Agriculture Insurance Schemes Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY)
  • It offers protection against adverse weather conditions like droughts, excess rainfall, and temperature fluctuations.
  • Premiums are heavily subsidised by the Government of India.
Pension & Social Security Schemes Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-Dhan (PM-SYM)
  • It is a pension scheme for unorganized sector workers.
  • It offers a monthly pension of ₹3,000 after age 60.
  • The contributions are shared between workers & government.
National Pension Scheme (NPS)
  • Voluntary long-term retirement savings scheme.
  • Open to citizens aged 18–70.
  • Market-linked returns & tax benefits.
Atal Pension Yojana (APY)
  • Pension schemes targeting the unorganized sector.
  • Fixed pension of ₹1,000 to ₹5,000 per month based on contributions.
